HUNDREDS JOIN TO DEVELOP COPD NATIONAL ACTION PLAN
On February 29 and March 1, more than 200 individuals, including patients, caregivers, health care providers, pharmacists, researchers, advocacy groups, industry representatives and government officials, convened for the 2016 COPD Town Hall to work together to begin creating the COPD National Action Plan. Currently, no standard plan for all 50 states exists. The COPD National Action Plan will provide a framework to help reduce the burden of COPD nationwide.
On the first day, of the COPD Town Hall, government officials, COPD advocates, and physicians provided an outlook on the disease. Attendees also heard about the importance of collaboration to address the challenges of COPD in order to create a better future for those affected by the disease.
After the opening remarks, all attendees were invited to join one of six working groups, each charged with developing objectives, strategies, and benchmarks for a specified goal of the plan.
During the second day, each working group presented their recommendations based on the discussions on the previous day and answered attendee questions. The input received is currently being incorporated into the COPD National Action Plan. Once drafted, all COPD stakeholders will have the opportunity to provide feedback to further organize the plan.

FEEDBACK FROM THE COMMUNITY
“My favorite part was the opportunity to work together with professionals who were interested in hearing from the patients who were able to attend - to listen as we shared with them what living with COPD is like, and what we as patients feel is important to include in an Action Plan,” said Karen Deitemeyer, patient advocate.
“Excellent effort to initiate a working framework for a national COPD action plan,” said Winston Liao, healthcare provider and group facilitator at the event. “The audience, with a diverse representation, was very engaged, enthusiastic, and energized by the speakers and their presentations, as well as by being a part of the 6 working groups.”
"Teva was pleased to join with other industry organizations and COPD stakeholders in the unprecedented event to build a National COPD Action Plan," stated Shannon Dzubin, Director of Public Policy for North America at Teva Pharmaceuticals. “This was an important opportunity for all stakeholders to come together to consider both public policy and patient advocacy to address the unmet needs of the COPD community.
