I plan on starting a good work out schedule soon. I am just sort of warming up right now. I walked 1 minute on TM Monday. Planned 1 minute more each day but not past 1 yet. I think the members I was working out with before are all gone. By August I expect to be working out, I hope.

Hey Mary. I'd love to try this with you, but can't do it on Saturday or Sunday. That's when I've got Baby Paul. Let me know if you want to do it.

Hi MaryAZ, I don't walk like I use to. Shame on me. Anyway, my kidney doc (bless his heart) has started me on something for GERD. I'm thinking that will help get rid of alot of my sob. My point is, when I start feeling less sob, I'd like to join the exercise club. I don't have a TM, but I can get out and walk in the cool of the morning or evening. Pat

Oh, this is great. I thought I would be alone. I sort of want some of my company to leave and then I can get on a better routine. Either Tuesday or next Saturday I think my grandson is leaving. He has been here about 2 months. Was very helpful to Joe and me and some other family members while here.
I think I will plan on a slow start on August 1st. I may not get much done or I may but at least August 1st sounds like a good starting day.
Glad to see you all. Have a great weekend if you can.

I'll join in also. I have been quite lax here and that is not a good thing. I am going to start on Monday and see how it goes.

I took my car into the mechanic this morning and then walked to the end of downtown and back to the bus stop. Maybe 1/2 mile. I started getting sob. Gee I love the unpredictability of this disease. Pat

Good for you, Pat! I walk on the TM most days and lift weights 3 times a week. It is required for my tx prep. I am currently walking about 20 minutes at 1.3 MPH. Can't seem to get past that 20 minute mark. I would like to work up to 30 minutes.
I currently use 2lb weights to work my arms, and do a squat/sit sort of thing against the wall to strengthen my legs. Once I get into rehab I will be able to use a regular leg press and other stuff. I have to be able to press 80% of my weight as an absolute minimum requirement for tx.
I have an appt. Thursday with the lady at rehab to get me started.

Merry, I have been pretty slack with the exercise for a while now. I said I would get at it on Monday and now going into Wednesday and not a step on that treadmill yet. I had a hard time getting past the 20 min but backed off to 1.2 and made it to 30 and worked up up 1.5. That's all I can do on 14% and need to get back there.

Colleen; We will get it started yet. I didn't commit until this coming week. I tried starting a week ago and did the 1 minute on Monday and got just that far only. Just like you. Definitely to build up just get the distance and the speed will come. Slow it down. I plan to post in here Monday. Now I have made it very explicit.

How many reps do you have to do? I currently do 20 reps with 80#. To make it 80% of my weight, I would need to press 20 more pounds.

Guest - that 80% leg press requirement is just ONE TIME. Thank goodness!! LOL But, the weight training - they want us to do 2-3 reps of each exercise 5-6 times. So, basically, about 15 of each. Not too hard for my upper body (with 2 lb weights), but the leg exercises really make my thighs burn. I do 3, rest and then do 3 more. By then my legs are shaking so bad I have to sit down. But, I'm working on it!!
Colleen - for me walking at 1.2 just is not a comfortable speed. It is a struggle to walk slowly. But, I will try it. You said you use 14% incline. My TM has its inclines at 1.5, 2, 2.5, etc up to 10. I don't know what the numbers relate to. I use the 1.5 but don't know what it means! I guess I need to dig out the book - if I still have it. The thing is about 10 years old.
Well, I dug out the manual and the numbers are %. Top incline is 10%. My husband walks on 7.5 or 8. I can't even begin to walk with it set up like that. Can't imagine going to 14%. How in the world do you do that?

I know she is lower than I can even begin to imagine with what all she does. It is MUCH HARDER to walk with an incline than without. If any of you are looking to make a certain time, do it first without the incline. At rehab you have to set the incline yourself. My TM at home is automatically set at .5. It was not clearly stated about my .5 incline when I started. The numbers I would use at rehab are adjusted down just a little at home to compensate for the incline. Joe is pushing me sort of to get back to rehab. I plan to. I want to get a few things done first and really focus on me. My grandson just went home last night. I do plan on beginning at home first. I expect to post here Monday at least with something if only 1 minute. By Monday there should be no more of what is in the pictures below. Thought you might like to see what my TM is used for. I tried and tried to make smaller. I have not yet learned my software and so they are clickables. This one is Dreamer.

It looks like your TM is getting lots of good use, Mary! I think it is great that you are planning to start walking again. Remember - that one minute you walked is one minute more than you did the day before!! Next time, maybe you'll get to 1½ minutes, and then 2. Just go at the pace you can. Anything is better than nothing.
The 14% lung function for Colleen makes sense - lots more sense that her walking at a 14% incline! I am at 17% (according to my doctor) or 20% (according to Shands). Guess it depends on who is administering the PFT. Either way, not much air. I feel fortunate that I am still able to do as much as I can.
I will try to remember to post my exercising on a regular basis. We'll get this going again!

That is so funny. What a cute kitty. I love the name 'Dreamer.' Thanks for posting the pics, they really made me smile.

The pictures seem to have served their purpose. Was just trying to brighten a day. Glad some of you enjoyed them. Dreamer is just adorable with Joe. His most favorite spot is in Joe's lap, curled up asleep. When he was little he used to bury his head in Joe's arm and it was like with his head buried 'you ccouldn't see him'. I may get to do some warm ups tomorrow. Today got things done. Will see how it goes. Have a good weekend all. I expect to post something in the way of work out by Monday for sure.

Merry, thanks for the push on the leg press. I decided to try to do the 80% of my weight today. I really surprised myself. I did 20 reps of 100#. So, thanks for the inspiration - I should have increased my weight before this!

Guest - I am very impressed!! I did that one rep at 80% - by the skin of my teeth. I think the only reason I managed that one was because the Therapist told me it was the passing mark on my evaluation. I weigh a little more than you - I had to press 104#. Sure can't imagine doing 20!!
When I wrote about the reps, I got it backwards. (I went back and reread my instruction sheet) I am supposed to do 5-6 reps of each exercise, and 3 sets of each. Works out to the same total, but I think it's a little harder to do more reps at once.
I have to go buy some 3# dumbells. The 2# once are really too light - there's not enough degree of difficulty involved.

I cheated a bit. I should have done 102# to be 80% but the machine goes in 10# increments -- I thought 20 reps took care of the slight difference in weight!

I won't tell a soul! I tried varying my speed yesterday. I started off at 1.2 MPH as Colleen suggested. After 5 minutes I upped it to 1.3 and then went back to 1.2 at the end. I managed 23 minutes and went just over ½ mile. Yay, me!
