its that lovely time of year again. They are advertising the flu shot earlier and earlier each year. Our CVS started advertising them about 3 weeks ago. Here are a few links to answer any q's you might have and the map of the flu activity. I love the map, always check it so I know how bad it is and when to take extra precautions. I think I will sticky this for the season. Remember to go get you shot, better to be safe than sorry!!! Here's the map: www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/usmap.htmHere's some Q & A's about the flu: www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/vaccineeffect.htm

I was in Walmart on Monday and they were set up to do flu and pneumo shots. There was nobody in line, so I got mine. Now, I won't have to worry about it.

I saw the places giving shot listed in the paper the other day. I saw one sign on a store. The question page is a good read. Thanks Colleen.

Thanks for that Colleen. I was wondering if you got it a few months earlier because you can't remember when you got it, if it mattered. My friend got his last week at CVS. I usually get mine at the dr. I hope I can get mine at Penn.

Oh, Sue...you're playing with fire... I hope you'll change your mind and get your shot. Maybe those people who got sick figured they didn't have to take precautions (like hand washing) since they'd had their shots. I have never had the flu, but I wouldn't dream of skipping my shot.

Well I'm in there with Sue I've always been sicker with the flu shots than without...think about it it's only flu it's not some terrible life dreadful dease. Also this last year I have found out that my immune system is VERY low and I'm doing a cure to build it up so if I shoot in the flu I get it and I'm not risking ever again those shots ;I was sick from 6 to 8 months couldn't get over it.No shots for me.I even asked my doctor if he was getting his shot and he said "nay I get fever just like I get the flu so I'll pass"Plus there is alot of information that they aren't giving us about these shots and what is in them.Yes I was hospitalized twice this winter both times for a month BUT when I did my shots I was ill almost all year.So to each his own.Last year there was a young woman who had just had a baby and she is now paralized after doing her shot ;I'm sorry I don't trust these things anymore

most of those articles are on the swine flu & how it was accidentally/intentionally put into the system. I know its now in the shot but I get it for the regular flu, not swine. I know some are sensitive to it and can't blame them for not getting it but I for one will be.
The panic over swine is basically over anyway and hopefully gone for good.
These articles don't say much about the flu side effects just that it didn't have to happen.

If I just catch a bad cold I can be down in bed for 2 weeks. I have got the flu shots for the last 9 years which is when I was dx'd with COPD. I cannot afford to get the flu. My system is too run down. I know the swine flu was very questionable.
Shana, you know your body better than others. Do what you feel you have to do. Try to be sure you are correctly informed. If you really like your doctor and he agrees, then maybe that is what you should do.
My Mother and I both got ours. We were at doctor appointments (separate) and they were offered. My granddaughter who is most apt to bring it home does not yet have one, nor my son who is now here on and off. Not easy getting these two in. I thought even with the flu shot you could get the flu, but just not as bad. I am concerned with my granddaughter and we need to get hers. She goes to school everyday around other kids.
My husband cannot get one now and that worries me because of all the other problems he has, he does not need the flu. His platelets and WBCs and RBCs are way too low. Did bone marrow test yesterday to see what is going on but will be 2 weeks for those results.
We all have issues with the shots. Do whatever each of you thinks is right.

Mary, last year I went to Walgreens and got my flu shot. I was in and out in about 15 minutes. Might be a good idea to get that grandaughter's shots. I know kids are so busy, but this is such a fast way to get the shot.

They say it is more important for the caregivers to get the shots than it is the patient -- I guess because the caregivers are out and about more, and can bring the virus into the household.
A bout with the flu is so tough on the lungs. Anyone with lung disease -- that would be all of us on this forum! -- is at increased risk of death from the flu. Flu is not "just the flu"....It is a very serious disease that can kill. If you get it and survive it, that's great....but how many people will you infect in the process?? And what if they die?? So there is more to consider than just yourself.
Just my opinion...something to think about.

Myth or no Myth about getting sick after the flu shot. I've never had the flu but am afraid not to get one every year. I'm more vulnerable now with COPD. Also everyone, get a whooping cough shot. It would be a death sentence to us. It's going around again. We got rid of it once, but it is coming back because parents listen to all the side affects and won't get their children vaccinated. We don't want it. I got mine about 3 weeks ago.

I got mine thee 1st of Oct. I get one every year and wouldn't dare go without. I get really sick with the flu and it does affect my lungs. Joy will not get a shot and that worries me. She very seldom gets sick but I can't get her to realize she can bring it home to me. I don't rag her about it, we all have to do what we think best.

Hi Nancy, I know just where to get the shot and we already picked up papers weeks ago. Have to get her Mom or Dad to go along in order to get the granddaughters. Dad was gone until a couple nights ago and Mom is sometimes hard to pin down when granddaughter is available. Soon, if Joe keeps doing okay. He has so very many doctor appointments and sometimes two in a day and he has no more 'go' left in him. Soon as Joe is okay to go and GD is home and son is here, they will go up the street and get them. Hopefully within this week now.

I glanced at the articles, read a few but not all and have to ask Shana if there is something I am missing besides the swine being let out on purpose? If there's one that has info on the reg flu I would like to read it. I get my shot every year and now with transplant I will not chance NOT getting one but hubby hates them and so far I have not been able to talk him into one but then again he has never had the flu and I did about 20 years ago, never again, It was AWFUL!!!!!!
I understand if you get bad side effects. I hope your lucky enough to skate by and not get the flu, especially since your lungs are so vulnerable to begin with. Something like this will take a lot of your function away and most of the time the damage is permanent especially if you end up with the pneumonia.
Good discussion!

As I have read and been told by DR, flu shot contains dead virus and can not cause flu. It is easy to vilanize something we don't have complete understanding of. There are many CYBER SPEAK types that feed fear and distrust. I prefer to go to the professionals in whatever area of knowledge I need, ie, DR, nurse and pharmacist rather than average Joe for information needed. We on this board many times have shared information we have gotten but always defer back to the professionals. I do not believe ALL I read on computer or what is talked about aroound the water cooler. Allergy shots are Live Virus so every week when I get my shot I have to wait a half hr so nurse can examine injection site to make sure I don't have adverse reaction.

The flu shot is not a live virus. While some people do get a reaction to it, and may feel bad for a few days, it CAN NOT give you the flu.
The flu nasal mist is a live virus. It is not appropriate for anyone with a chronic illness or a low immune sytem, because they might get the flu from it.
Please also keep in mind that the flu is not a cold or the generic 48-hour stomach bug that so many people believe it is. It is a severe respiratory infection that last for several weeks. It is highly contagious and can cause permanent lung damage and even death.
