Hi all. I suppose since July started I have done my usual things. Walked on the tm,breathing and weight exercises and of course worked out in my flowers when i could. I sometimes take about a 20 minute walk outside with my husband and seem to get a little sob. Does anyone have a clue why i can walk on the tm for 29 minutes at a pretty good pace and not get sob but go outside and walk at a slow pace and have that problem. WE had 29 postings for June. Lets try to get to 50 postings for july. Don't you think when you move that you feel better? lynn

Lynn, for me, I have to avoid inclines, even slight ones cuz they can do me in. Then you may have the allergy thing that contributes to sob or humidity too.

The ground is uneven which makes it much more difficult to walk. In addition, the treadmill is regulated to a specific pace. When you walk outside, you are using your muscles differently because of different/changes in speed. Also...can you tell I've had this problem?...when you use the TM, you hold on to the handles. That reduces your effort tremendously. Try swinging your arms while you're on the TM - you'll see what I mean. Well, I'm finally getting back to posting my exercise. As usual, I walked the dog a couple of times - total of about half a mile on very uneven ground. I went this morning and joined a gym - finally found one I like! I took a one hour water aerobics class. It was so much fun! But boy, was it a workout! My muscles were all quivering when we got through. I can't remember the last time I worked out that hard. They have classes 3 times a week at 3 different times - so it's very convenient. They also offer a class called Mature Power which is geared to "Mature Adults" and focuses on strength and flexibility. It is once a week, and I'm thinking about taking it, too.

I meant 41 posting's for June. Don't know where i came up with 29. Good idea for walking on the tm Merry. I will try swinging my arms tomorrow. Your new gym sounds great especially the water aerobics. how are you doing Linda NY? Today i walked on the tm and did my weights. Did some yard work and then some housework. Might have overdone it a little bit on the housework, got down on the floor and went thru some magazines. my legs sure did hurt when i got up. How are you doing Mary? Thank you for the suggestions Sue. Inclines are hard on me also. Good week to all. lynn

Went to the pool again yesterday and did 1 hour of water aerobics. After class, I hung around and swam a few laps. I am already seeing some improvement in my shoulder -- I am really grateful for that! Today, I took Petey for 2 good walks and walked down to get the mail-a pretty good hike in itself.

Went to water aerobics today. Before class I did the leg press - 3 sets of 6 at 80 pounds. Before I broke my shoulder, I was doing about 130 pounds, so I've really gone down. Hopefully it will come back pretty quickly. Once again, my legs are jello. Maybe I should by stock in the Jello company ;D

Saturday - my visit to the leg press is really paying the price today! My thighs are so sore I can hardly get in or out of a chair....and climbing the stairs is murder! I took some Tylenol and hopefully will be better tomorrow.

I feel so bad and so mad at myself. I want to work out. It takes the effort, that I struggle to get. Seems I am always doing something and I keep letting 'it' take priority. I should not do that. Many days I want to sleep a lot. My breathing is so bad and if the workout doesn't help, then I see the doctor. I remember July started and I thought "Ok, I will get in there with them". It is the middle of the month. The closest I got was a day I almost started and some 'real' thing got in the way that could not have been avoided. I got to do this, I got to do this, I got to do this, I got to do this, I got to do this, I got to do this. I got to do this, I got to do this, I got to do this, I start out in the morning thinking I will do it after my meds and coffee. Something interrupts me and it gets away from me. These are not excuses but it is my fault. Maybe something will come of my posting. It has just quieted down since Sunday. We only have one child right now. One thing is good, if one, they cannot fight with each other. I think I am getting close. It is so dumb because my breathing is awful. Enjoy those walk Lynn. I would love to be able to take walks. Merry, I enjoy your life. Thanks for sharing. You are very blessed with your surgery. I have rambled.

HI mary. I AM SO SORRY YOU ARE HAVING SUCH A TIME AND HAVE SO MUCH ON YOUR PLATE. MY SECRET TO WALKING ON THE TM MOST EVERYDAY IS THIS. MY TM TIME IS MY PRAYER TIME AND IF I DONT WALK I DONT PRAY AND IF I DONT PRAY I FEEL GUILTY AND THAT IS HOW I MAKE MYSELF WALK MOST DAYS. I DONT KNOW HOW IT GOT STARTED THAT WAY BUT IT DID AND I AM GLAD. HOPE THAT THINGS WILL GET BETTER FOR YOU MARY AND THAT YOU GET SOME TIME FOR YOUR SELF. MERRY SORRY ALL CAPS. BY THE TIME I NOTICED IT I WAS ALMOST THRU WITH THE POST. LYNN

I have to skip the gym today -- dog was limping yesterday. This morning, his whole back end isn't working - so taking him to the vet. He doesn't seem to be in pain, just massive weakness in back legs. Appt. in an hour.

Merry, hope all goes well at the Vet. Lynn that is a good incentive. On the TM I used to listen to Sermons that I have on tape. Also used to try to memorize words to some of my favorite Christian songs. Never thought about a prayer time. That is a good idea.
Anyway, maybe posting here yesterday did help. Keep in mind that I am very weakened state other than just walking from room to room. I did several warm ups of 3 reps each and did 3 each of several of my 1# weights. This doesn't sound like a lot but it was. I actually was counting how many but got to over 6 and I lost track. It was just over six for each.
That was good. I almost didn't do them tho. I do this in the master bedroom. My granddaughter uses the master bedroom bathroom. She was showering. After that I have to wait for the humidity to go away. This is an example of how I often get sidetracked and don't get to it.
I will try very hard to keep this up now.

Mary - that's great. Any work with weights - even 1#ers - is good for you. Can you encourage g.daughter to use the exhaust fan while she showers? It really keeps the humidity down. I'm planning to go to Walmart in the morning, so should get a good walk in the process.

I did at least as much as I did yesterday. Tomorrow I will try to add the TM but maybe only 2 minutes. Was going to do it today but Joe kept forgetting to put it down. Not a good idea for me to do it anymore. It is down now.
I am still not doing well but can tell the difference as little as I have done. It forces you to breath in. PLB is one of the things I include in the warmups. I kept forgetting to post this today.
Merry, There is no exhaust fan in that bathroom. There is a window and there is a fan that we use and it gets turned on in the bedroom and blows in the bathroom. That is for me but I will be sure she is using it. I use it to make it cooler and I need air not moving. Hope everyone is doing good and enjoying the outdoors if not too hot.

Happy Monday! Boy is it hot! Thank goodness for water exercises I did one hour in the pool with the slave master. Before that, I used the leg press. I did 1 set of 6 at 85 pounds, and then bumped it up to 100 for 2 more sets. It was quite easy, so I guess I'm getting my strength back pretty quickly.

Merry, good for you. Sounds great. Well, I am very slowwwww!! I did the same weights and warmups today. Planned on TM but didn't make it today. I took Sunday off. I always tried to take Sunday off and think it is good because it leaves something to look forward to. For now I will try all other days but if got in gear, I would take Wednesday off too. I don't know if this working out is going to help my breathing this time or not.

Mary - be patient. You know it takes a little time to feel the results. It's great that you are trying again. Before you know it, we'll be out there with Wendy doing a 5K...NOT!
Lynn - what have you been up to? How much time do you do on the TM? I was walking 30 minutes before my accident. Haven't gotten back into it yet.

Hi Mary and Merry. You know Mary Merry is right it does take time to get back in the grove. Give your self some credit for trying. Had a busy week last week so didn't post to much. This week i have walked on the tm,breathing and weight exercises. Merry i usually walk 31 minutes. i used to do 30 minutes but every time i would get to 30 minutes i would have a flare up. Sounds funny but i swear it is true. After the last flare up i thought i am going to walk 29 or 31 minutes from now on. A couple of years ago i was up to 45 minutes and then had two flare ups back to back and have never got back there. since then I have decided that is too much. Plan to stay between 31 and 35 minutes. You sound like you are really doing good at the gym. Does the water make you tired? You are really doing good on the leg press sounds like. lynn

Mary - that's what you said the last time...and yet, you quickly upped your time Lynn - 31 minutes sounds perfect to me. I did 115 pounds on the leg press today ( 3 sets of 6 ). I can really feel the difference when I come up our steps. We have 5 steps up to the back door and 8 to the front door. Same distance, but I had nephew build the front ones shallower -- much easier to climb for family with bad knees. We lived in southern Florida for 26 years - everything is single level there and I never climbed any stairs all those years. My thighs and knees really feel it here. The water doesn't make me tired at all. Just the opposite. You're able to do much more because of the buoyancy and because you don't worry about getting hurt. No fear of falling. No matter what the exercise is, if it is too strenuous, you can just do it a little slower or make smaller movements - like, instead of big jumps, you can just do little jumps...or little kicks, or whatever. It's highly recommended for older folks for just that reason.
