April 8, 2009
Today is Day 9 of my new life. I have not worn any oxygen for over a day, including during exercise. My stamina is increasing quickly and I am ready to blow this popsicle joint.
I have not needed any pain medicine in 2 days. My incision is still sore, but as long as I remember to put my hand on it when I cough, it is fine. The second drainage tube is barely trickling, and I'll bet he takes it out tomorrow.
At Physical Therapy today, I walked on the treadmill for 2 sets of 10 minutes at 1.2 mph. Then I got on the leg press. Did 3 sets of 6 at 75 pounds. All with no supplemental oxygen.
This afternoon was the weekly support group for pre- and post-transplant patients and caregivers/family members. It was quite interesting to watch the inter-play and reactions of people in various legs of their journeys. One young man is 20 years old with Cystic Fibrosis and on a ventilator, accompanied by his dad. A 60-ish woman is the caregiver for her husband - a double-lung recipient who is not doing well. She comes alone. Another man received his lungs almost 3 years ago. He comes in wearing a leather jacket and a "bad to the bone" t-shirt. He rides a Harley. He reminds me of a fellow named Ken. There is a grandfather just entering this journey with his grandson, and a nurse who is frightened of what is to come. Each a very different story -- each will have a different outcome.
The good Lord willing, and the creek don't rise, Friday we will rent our home away from home for the next month or so, and begin the next phase of this crazy life.

Merry, I'm overjoyed for you. You may not be able to run a marathon, but I bet you can get some jogging in once you're home and have fully recuperated. Pat

Merry, this post is so informative. Your frame of mind is such an inspiration. I realize things have gone well but still it is not a cake walk. I really found that very interesting about all the other stories. Keep up the good work. Don't forget us in your new life. I am so very happy for you. You deserve a limo ride. I just want to dance for you.

Just as a postscript -- we signed the papers and got the keys for the condo this afternoon. And the doc says I'm out of here tomorrow. He wanted to discharge me today, but all the stuff wasn't ready....Like a place to live

Merry, I have a few questions, and if your not comfortable answering, that is fine.
I was wondering since you had a single transplant, do you still need to use the inhalers for the other lung? And what has your FEV1 gone up too?? Curious minds LOL!! Your doing so well, gives me such hope!
