I went to the local park this morning and walked with my walking poles. I saw 3 other people walking with poles. They're catching on. I walked about 1/2 hour. My pedometer stopped working, so have no idea how far I actually walked. It's a beautiful morning here.

Pat, are these the kind of poles you're talking about? www.walkingpoles.com/And please refresh my memory; are you on O2? I walked on the TM for 30 minutes; did 3/4 of a mile at 1.5 mph and burned 120 calories. I'm excited because this is the first time in MONTHS I've been able to walk for a continuous 30 minutes! Yay!

Adina, no I am not on oxygen. But some one who is, thought they could put their 02 in a backpack and walk and use the poles.
And, yes, those are the poles. I bought mine at Target for 20.00. I know you can pay more, but they work for me.
BTW, congrats on walking minutes. That's a very good thing and keep up the good work.

I went shopping with my SIL today to some "junk" shops. Got in pretty good walks between stores. When we got back to her house we walked around their farm to check out the animals and her garden. Walking on grass is alot more work than walking on a sidewalk -- sort of hilly and hard going in some places. I bet my legs will be sore tomorrow.

Thanks, Pat. And thanks for both the support on my walking and the heads up on Target. That's a much better price. I'll bet you got in a pretty good workout using those poles.
Merry, sounds like you got in a good workout. I agree that walking on grass, etc. IS more of a workout than on the sidewalk.

Not working out well yet. Yesterday I had planned to take off as I was feeling the effects of Tuesday and wanted to pace this. I planned on getting to rehab today but 'we' had somewhat of a stressful day yesterday and I think between that and the bad air quality day today 'we' stayed home. Joe was in agreement this time.
I just cannot get motivated today. I am dragging. Almost time for another nap. Hopefully tomorrow.

MaryAz, it is hard to get going when you're already dragging; I know it all too well. But I'm here to cheer you on, to help you get moving once again.
I did another 30 minutes on the TM today (Thursday), but I had to break it up into 30 sections, stopping a few minutes in between each section to really regain my breath. But I did .75 miles again at 1.5 mph. Whew!

Good job Adina! I was up to a mile in 30 minutes when I had to stop going to rehab. If I don't get back to it soon, I'm going to lose that progress, and I sure don't want to do that.

Yes, Merry, I'm encouraging you to get back to it, too! I used to be able to do a mile in 30 minutes (walked 2 mph), but I got lazy--cause I've never like exercise for the sake of exercise--and am now paying the price for it. So, let's go, everyone! Up and at em!

Adina, exercise, bah humbug. Yet an evil necessity.
I walked about 2 miles yesterday around a university campus. It takes me forever since I am using either my cane or my walker. I broke it up into increments. We were waiting for the puppy and it helped take my mind off things.
I start water therapy 2 days a week next week. They are going to need to start me in the baby pool. LOL.

Gretchen, water therapy sounds wonderful. When you're in the baby pool are you going to 'goo goo, ga, ga'? lol
I went to the park for a walk with my poles. One of the tips came off, so had to put them back in my car til I have the patience to get it back on the pole:( I finished walking without them and got about 35 minute walk in. Walking through a big store or mall gets me more mileage in, but walking on pavement is a whole lot different. I think it was Sue who said walking on grass made it tougher. She's right. I walked on the grass and I could feel it. So went back to the sidewalk.
Well, I had a piece of bread with peanut butter and jelly. That'll hold me a couple of hours. I want to go out and walk some more. There is a open shopping area about 3 miles from me. Believe it or not, I use to walk over there. There's a store there called The Dress Barn. A misnomer. They have the most beautiful clothes in there. So as ole Fraser would say, "off you go"...lol See ya tomorrow...
BTW, any effort to keep active is time well spent. Pat

Somedays my house gets a little more crowded with all of you in it. There are things that I do that bring different people to mind. Adina, this was your day. Nice to have you over. I guess one day I better start sharing my home in the picture section. You were helping me with my TM. I still didn't walk long but longer. I did 2 minutes and stopped and then in a little while did 3 minutes. I am really out of shape. That is okay. There was no way I could get away without trying more than once after your post. TM 5 minutes @ 1.1Merry has often been with me when I have been walking. If I keep this up I will be at 15 minutes before very long. Didn't take too long last time.

Well, I was a slouch yesterday. Time got away from me and I didn't get my treadmilling done. Gretchen, doing that amount of walking under those circumstances deserves a round of applause. The water therapy sounds great and much better for your joints. Keep us posted on that next week. Pat, I think it's great that you can walk on "regular" ground (i.e., not a TM) like you do. I think 35 minutes is great and agree that any activity is time well spent. Mary, good for you! You increased your time. We'll all just have to keep encouraging each other. I know I need it; I need someone to "report in to" to help keep me going. I'll do better today.

I tried out that walking video this morning, the first time made it 4 minutes and my leg muscles were burning and feeling like jello! Little while later did the chair stretches, made it through the whole thing, Thank god! Was afraid I wasn't gonna make it through that one either. Went back to the walking one and made it 8 minutes. Was happy I made it that far. SO total 12 minutes walking, I'm Ok with this its been a while and I am not gonna beat myself up over it! I hate the treadmill and I am going to try to stick to this every morning and hopefully make it to the end of the video. I wonder how long it will take me to reach the end? ??

Colleen, Good job you are doing. Don't push too much too fast as that is not good either. Go slow.
Adina, Being accountable to someone helps me too. On a day that I just don't feel like doing it, I do it anyway knowing that I will have to come in here and report. Well, I don't 'have' to but I made an agreement with myself to do this when I joined in.
Besides, like yesterday, I wanted to tell you that I tried what you said. Just getting going today. Nothing yet. Got up late.

Good going, Mary! I have never like exercise for the sake of exercise, that's why I suggested just getting started. It's what I have to push mySELF to do, too. And I also find it helpful to be accountable to someone else. I guess it gives me extra incentive to do what I need to be doing. I'm going to have to add some strength training again, too.

I was worked out yesterday in bed, and later in a chair. The PT guys will be around in about 15 minutes for my next session. They may walk me in the hall. I am doing so well, hey were amazed! When they got me up for breakfast yesterday they planned to help me to my feet, but when they turned around, I was already up! I left ICU less than 8 hours after my surgery for a private room. I'm heading over to chat now if I have time before PT shows up.

Oh Merry! You're putting the rest of us to shame! LOL How terrific! I'm so glad to hear you're doing so very, very well!
Colleen, you DID start a new thread for this week. I wanted to post in answer to Mary-AZ's post yesterday, and I guess that brought this thread to the top. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon, and then my daughter and I are going to go "play" on this beautiful, sunny spring day... so THAT may be my exercise today... I'll check in later on your other thread, tho.

I will just stop in this one to say to Merry what a great help all that rehab working out was for you. What you did should go down in the record books. Seems good proof of how being in shape can help. Nowww, if I could just get started. I have started honest. Such a great feeling to read about Merry doing so well. Adina, it is always the first step that helps. I remember when I used to 'iron'. Remember that. It would sit and sit until I finally would start. Once I started I wanted to do it all. Just that 1st one. ;D
