Hi my fellow exercisers ;D I walked Sam's club the other day and got in 2 miles. In the process I lost my prescription glasses Now I have to go get new ones next month. Forgot to ask the insurance gal today how much my insurance covered on new glasses. Guess I'm gonna find out. When I attended diabetes classes I found out the big belly problem can be resolved through the diabetic diet. So far that is coming true for me. No flour (or white stuff) or sugar. Low carbs. (you can't have breaded foods). You have to change your whole way of eating, but I guarantee you will never go hungry on this diet. Eat 5 small meals a day. I'm not real good about that. If I do get a sweet tooth, I get one slice of sourdough bread (acceptable), peanut butter and sugarless (smuckers) jam/jelly or marmalade. For a x-tra special sweet tooth, I buy one dark chocolate candy bar from See's candies...of course sugarless. It's wonderful ;D I'm not a expert, but if I can help out on the diabetic diet, let me know. Pat

I need to crack down on my eating Pat! I know a person I work with looses a few lbs a week on the diabetic (low carb) diet, he has no choice.
I walked 15 min at 1.5 on the treadmill at work last night.

You guys put me to shame! I put on one of those things that measures your distance when you walk. I put on a mile, and I believe I had reset it by mistake so it could have been two. I'm satisfied with a mile. I don't know how accurate they are. I put on 2200 steps. I wish I had a treadmill. My husband hasn't taken the tension off the bike yet but if I wait too long I'll figure out how to do it.

Here is a very good site about Diabetis and the recipes are really good and broke down in categories. I have a guide from a nutritionist for me to take 1200 to 1500 calories, together with my exercise I could lose. I think it is modeled like diabetis diet. In my case I just cannot get it figured out simply. I don't know how everyone remembers it all. www.dlife.com/dLife/diabetic-recipes.htmlAnyway, I won't be in here for a while I don't think. I am having a serious problem with my breathing and struggling to keep sats above 90 when I get up to walk. Soon as I can I will be back. I will explain this more somewhere else on the board. Walk good all.

Linda -- the problem with pedometers is making sure you have it set to your stride length. You have to go outside and walk for like 20 normal steps, then measure how far you went. Divide it by 20 to find out how long your steps are. Then you have to enter that figure into the pedometer or it won't measure your distance correctly.

I went to the Y today to walk the treadmill and maybe stationery bike. I wore too warm of clothes. Sweatpants and sweater.. Everyone else was in shorts. dum de dum dum..Anyway, I quit the TM after 15 minutes and decided to walk the indoor track because I knew it would be cooler up there. Well got there and started having sob. I don't know why. It's breezy out, so maybe that contributed to it? I even did a neb treatment before I left home. That's nearly always a guarantee that I'll be able to do what I set out to do...Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it..lol Pat

Monday Jan 26th
I went back to rehab today, and I was surprised how easily I got right back into it. I walked on the treadmill for 30 minutes at 1.6 (my RT made me cut my speed back from 2.0 that I had been doing). I will work my way back up pretty fast, because it was no problem today. I did the leg press - 3 sets of 6 at 120, 125 and 130 pounds. And did 3 sets of 5 stand up/sit down while holding the 2k medicine ball.
It was a good day!

Merry, that was a good day!
Pat, if you, or anyone else is interested, there is book titled something like "calorieking" that lists carb/calorie counts for all different foods including pre packaged and restaraunt/fast food. I was thumbing thru it at work and looks pretty good. I read several good reviews on it too when I googled it. I figure if I can stay away from the starches (or limit myself to 1 small portion, I'll do good)
mary, i bookmarked that diabetic recipe site, thanks.

Mary, I get emails from that web-site. Thanks for mentioning it to those who aren't aware of the diabetic diet. Sue, being diabetic now:(, I have to watch my carbs. I can't eat pasta anymore...sigh I use to make a great spaghetti sauce. Now I can't eat spaghetti. Oh well...

Pat -- you aren't on a carb-free diet are you? Have you tried the whole-wheat pastas? Complex carbohydrates are better for you, and I think you can have small servings. You get plenty of vegies in the sauce and add a salad, you've got a very nutritious meal.

Wednesday.....went to rehab today. My legs were very sore from Monday and I really felt it today. I upped my TM speed to 1.8 for 30 minutes. Did the same on the leg press as I did Monday - but it was harder today because of my sore muscles. I guess I'll stay at this level for a week or so till I get back to normal. Also did 3 sets of 5 sit/stands with the medicine ball.

Merry, you are doing good. Still go slow. You forgot to put the drug link in your post to me in the COPD section. Lol! I should be back in here soon. I had a good plan for today but my meds messed me up. I did warm-ups and weights. Just had planned TM but almost did nothing. Hopefully tomorrow. Sue, If it is the book I have, I really like it, Calorie King Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter. Mine is the 2007 edition. I use it a lot." Check it on this link. tinyurl.com/at7truPat, I like that Diabetis food site. Can you eat Spagetti Squash. I am not good with the foods but just a thought. Not much to get for on Pasta. I wouldn’t want my spagetti sauce served on rice or noodles. My husband is Italian and that would not go over. It will take me forever to learn to throw a meal together like Merry just rattled off.

Yes Mary, that's the book! We have 2 copies at work, the diabetes dr gave us for a diabetic resident. Tho I am not a diabetic, it sounds like a sensible way to eat, more of a change in eating habits/what I eat than anything. (now I could be wrong on that...) But as long as I eat healthier things and watch my portions on the starches, I may be able to loose the weight I need to. And not go hungry at the same time. I have 2 cousins that are gonna try to loose weight with me, they are doing the Weight Watcher points.

I've always figured if you eat lots of veggies you'll lose weight. They have almost no calories (as long as you don't drown them in sauces) and they fill you up. Meat and a carb (potato, rice, pasta) should be treated as side dishes so you'll take small servings. Then the vegies are like your entree. I try to fill at least half my plate with vegetables including legumes for fiber. If we are having legumes, I usually don't fix a carb. Meat should be the size of a deck of cards (or less). And if you have a carb, have a small serving. Add a mixed green salad with a lo-fat dressing just for good measure and you will lose weight.

First off, I did warm ups and weights but still not TM today.
Sue, I think your thinking is about right. Merry is rattling it off like the Pros that I listen too. I cannot retain it all. I bet on the Internet you can find a lot of guides. Your cousins can probably guide you in the amounts. I have some papers that show your plate divided into proportions by what it is, which is like Merry is saying.
Isn't the lighter veggies not always the best to eat. I spent 6 years trying to learn some of this and not a lot sunk in. Food is not a subject I like. Too complicated for me. Hope I see you tomorrow and maybe the TM.

Thanks Merry........it really is about common sense eating. But I thought that meat and dairy dont have many carbs? I may have to go buy that book anyway.
