I'm thinking I am having bad reactiom to either Spiriva or Xopenex. I have read inernet information on side effects from both inhalers and they both say unusual side effects can involve breathing difficulties. I wonder what can replace either one of these. Albuterol is out, as the second I inhale it, I cough it back out. Is Symbicort a good replacement for Spiriva? What could I use besides Xopenex? Your opinions would be appreciated. I went to store and got very sob coming into my apt I got this way with Foradil, only worse:( I have not heard from my pulmonary doc today about my chest x-ray. When I had the reaction to Foradil, my llungs were clear, sat's were up. No outward problems, just terrible sob.

I read where if you are alleric to formolterol ie; foradil, perforomist, symbicor. I had a terrible reaction to Foradil. Gasped for ar. I definitely need to talk to pulmo doc again... The discussion was about Dulera inhaler. I don't know what was causing my sob before Dulera inhaler:( But it has gotten worse...

Pat, if this DR can't give you answers it would not be inappropriate to get referrer for new pulmo from your PC. Each DR seems to have differing views on medications and treatments. It's a rough road and I'm praying for you.

Thanks Ken. I will consider my options. Between the awful sob, allergies and trying to get my neck completely healed is a challenge. In physical therapy I am learning to walk correctly. My stride is not normal for me. I'm lucky I had the surgery as I could've becme paralized..

Pat - is this new SOB just since your surgery? It's possible that it is related to pain or your new way of walking... just a thought

I asked my pulmo about that and he didn't think my surgery pain played a significant role in my sov. I do have really bad allergies and think they are contributing. It's hard to say when this all started. I know I had it while in the rehab hosp and then I got home and it just continued I'd try to walk with my walker outside and couldn't get far because of neck pain and sob. I have been discouraged for months. I did start tje Dulera and my sob got worse. I didn't hear back my pulmo doc today regarding my chest x-ray. Guess I will have to call his office tomorrow:( Thanks for the ideas Merry and hope you are beginning to feel much better.

Pat, symbicort is another form of foradil (formoterol) so I doubt you'd be able to use it and it does have a steroid in it. I did great on it but I also did great with foradil, loved that drug.........Dulera is another form of foradil ie formoterol so this is probably why your so sob...I wonder why your doc keeps giving you formoterol when it makes you so sob? ?....BTW.....I googled dulera and the forum didn't die.....lol

LOL Colleen...I mean't if everytime we had a question, we'd not ask the board but just use googlr for answers:) If all steroid inhalers have that formoterol in it, I'd be up the creek without a paddle:) My choices keep getting more limited. I went back to using Asmanex and sob isn't flaring up as bad. My real test is going out and about..

Whenever you talk to your dr remind him that you cant take foradil. ...I had a dr try to tell me that i had to take my steroid in a seperate inhaler even after I told him it didnt work for me. He got upset with me and sent me to someone else who didnt know much about copd but i got that one to give me a pft and put me on advair.

Sue, we definitely have to be our own advocates....I didn't do well on albuteral and had one dr keep giving it to me....stopped seeing him, I mean if their not willing to work with you & listen to you just what good are they doing for you??? I changed Dr's and it was the best thing I ever did, this guy also had me on advair & foradil at the same time, its a wonder he didn't give me heart failure. That's when I really started to pay attention and research meds.
Pat, have them make a note in your chart about the foradil & ask lots of questions before taking a new med and if he's not listening to you, go shopping for a new doc.....JMHO~~~ being so sob over a med is just not worth it, especially when you know it causes sob.

BTW, I keep forgetting to ask Pat, are you taking anything for the allergies? THose meds may need to be changed and your body can build up an immunity to them and that will cause more sob if your allergies are not under control....just a thought~post nasal drip can add to it also.
