That's an interesting article, Colleen. I'm not in agreement with them for me personally. The best cough syrup I ever had was Terpin Hydrate with codeine (also known as poor man's gin). Dextromethorphan has also worked for me. The one they say is effective, pseudoephedrine, puts me on a very bad trip. I guess everyone reacts differently and I must be in the minority.

I thought it was interesting also. I can't take a lot of whats offered over the counter because of my thyroid, adverse reaction and its not fun. I do well with phenergan w/codeine. That's all I ever take anymore when I have a cold. Codeine works well as long as you don't take too much, it really quiets the cough for me and I would hate to go without it when I'm sick.

You do need to be very careful of taking too much med with codeine in it as it will slow breathing. I have the phenergan w/ Codeine also but my cough is more sinus or acid related so I have not taken it. They certainly gave me enough for the rest of my life and that very day some rapper died from taking too much and I understand that it is used by druggies now and there is a song about the Phenergan and Codeine. My Pulmo was not terribly happy about another Doctor prescribing it but I don't think he like this other Doctor or figured it was not his business. The Phenergan pills make me really sleepy.

When I have bronchitis and I am coughing to the point of not being able to breathe and codeine is the only thing that keeps me from passing out, the benefits outweigh the risks and I am well aware of what it can do to our central nervous system. I has to be used with caution. IMHO

Absolutely, when I had my prescription filled the pharmacists commented on how big a bottle he prescribed. Said they normally don't prescribe that much and then I heard the same day about the rapper so looked it up.

Same here Colleen , I don't like to suppress the cough but when you are coughing so hard all the time that you can't breath you have to do something.
