They have given me Levaquin when the Biaxin didn't work. My husband just got done using the Z-Pack two times. My doctor always tells me to take Mucinex but I honestly don't think it does anything. Do you have a Nebulizer? It seems whenever I go to the hospital, they give me a treatment along with the antibiotic. Are you on Spiriva? Albuterol? I found the Spiriva made a big difference in my breathing. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Toby..I use all this daily:
Spiriva x1 daily
Albuterol Neb treatments 2 or 3 times a day
Foradil x2 daily
Pulmicort (steroid inhaled) x2 daily
and Albuterol inhaler occasionally as needed or when I am out and can't do the nebulizer till I get back home.
and of course I am on o2..much more often since I returned from the hospital.
I don't even know what a Z Pack is tho I do see it referenced here sometimes.

City girl,
I just came off of a bad lung infection, it took three different rounds of pred and antibiotics. one round of amoxi and short burst of prednisone. second time was zpak and another short burst of pred. this was over the last month. I think my Dr got tired of either seeing my face or hearing me whine about how crappy i felt and he Rx'd me 1500 mg Cipro a day & 60 mg pred with a taper to 10 mg until further notice. I finally feel human again and will be returning to work on Sunday.
Exacerbations are terrifying to me I never want to be 'that sick' again...
I hope you feel better soon!
Hugs...
Diane

You need to call your Doctor if you feel you are getting something. At this time of year there are a lot of allergies, also. Many people use their neb a little more when they are not up to par so you might want to increase it to 4 times a day if you feel it helps. Best to ask Doctor, of course but 4X a day is not unusual. For me it works better than the inhaler.

Lord darlin..so sorry you have been so sick..yep..I remember some obits I have seen.."died from complications of COPD"..I am terrified too..glad you are able to get back to work..but you know to take it easy and go slow..right?
OK..I had just got my Rx's started and I waited too late..about 2 days late if I remember..so I have 32 Prednisones left..10mg tabs..there must be some way to take them with a taper..any suggestions? I don't see the need to get a new script for just 8 little pills previously taken..
also, I still have almost a whole bottle of 120 Cheratussin AC Syrup..so I guess I could take that..I am already taking the antibotic I mentioned above..
New Rx's will just cost more money and I have almost all of each and they are new..from the end of Jan.

I think this is a wonderful idea..I always keep at least a month's worth of Albuterol ahead..thanks a lot..why didn't I think of that..in the hospital I was on the neb every 2 hours..it made my heart rate 110 or 114 or 107..all the time..but here I am so I credit everything they did for me.
I appreciate all your thoughts and replies so much.

That is really still not a bad heart rate so I think you would be quite safe using it a little more.

Citygirl, Here is the directions on prednisone my husband received. Take 3 tablets daily for 3 days, 2 tablets for 3 days and then 1 tablet thereafter. There were 25 tablets 10 mg. each. You might want to try that. That is what they usually do when they are prescribed. Although last time I took them there was no gradual decrease. Hope this helps. Good luck and feel better soon!

Here at the Duke Medical Center, they tell the people in rehab the Rule of 20. If you're starting an exacerbation, stay on Spiriva and Advair/Symbicort. You can increase your combivent/atrovent by checking your pulse. Know what your pulse is after you take those meds normally then, during time of exacerbation, you can take an additional puff of combivent or atrovent then check your pulse in 1 or 2 minutes. If it's only increased by 5 or 10 points, you take another puff. You can take 1, 2 or 3 additional puffs of the med as long as your pulse increases no more than 20 points over normal. Check with your own doc but this is what they teach here. Same thing if you take nebs. Usual dose then if pulse goes up just a little, take 1/2 vial, if still not 20 above, take other 1/2.
