There are differewnt kinds of aspergillosis--see this site: www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001326.htm
Is it in his lungs? Is he in the hospital now? Is it being treated? As the web site shows it can be all the way from trivial to life-threatening. When I was hospitalized in 2002 they cultured it in a lung (along with e. coli and lots of other stuff) but it didn't cause me a problem. On the other hand, it can be quite serious. The fungus aspergillis is frequently found in hospitals so if someone has been a patient often, or in a nursing facility, or has a weakened immune system, or has had too much prednisone over a long period--these are all factors which predispose to aspergillosis. Ironically one treatment for it is more prednisone.

I have aspergillos niger(sp). It is in my fingernails and toenails. Lovely, just lovely. I was scripted some med for it but my insurance wouldn't pay, saying it was cosmetic. It's unsightly and painful. I keep my nails cut real short. A allergist tested me for the aspergollosis (or however you spell it) and it came back negative.

I had aspergillus in my lung when I had pneumonia. I know it can be life-threatening, but the type I had didn't seem to concern anyone. The only place I had heard of it before is in garden soil. I don't know if there is a connection or not.

John, he had been sick at home for about 4 wks. with fever he just kept getting worse, they put him in a hospital hee and thought he had cancer ,but sent him on to a bigger hospital,in which he stayed 2 wks and had gone on life support when they found the problem, but his kidneys failed and he passed. He was in his 60's. I didn't know him just through my husband.. thought it was very sad...

Sorry to hear, Virginia--he may have had the invasive form of aspergillosis--extremely difficult to treat.
