A while back there was a posting on CI or COPD International about why it was important for COPDers to be on a low carb diet and I was going to post it for you all that are wanting to lose weight but for some reason I can not get that web site to open for me. I have tried for days now, to no avail. Anyway, it had to do with carbs making you swell and therefore making it harder to breath. If I ever am able to get back onto that web site, I will see if I can find it and post it here. I can tell you that my PCP and my Pulmo dr, both told me to be on a low carb diet.

Betty - I know that it is important to keep your weight as low as possible, since excess weight presses on your lungs and makes it hard to breathe. I would get very SOB when I ate (even if I didn't overeat) as my stomach filled. So many things to watch out for.

Is this 'our' Betty Frazier? If so, good to see you post. I've heard pasta is not good for us. But I lost so much weight, I don't feel bad if I eat it. I have to clarify, I don't eat pasta very often. So maybe that makes the difference with me.

Hi Betty, I almost stopped by and said Hello to you the other day on Facebook. Something I spotted and got sidetracked. I think of you often. Hope you are doing okay. Could this be the one. I know I got this recent and CI is the only other place I read. I remember thinking this was a good one. I should put it in the COPD Section. I will leave it here. www.everydayhealth.com/health-report/copd/a-copd-diet.aspx

Yes, Pat it is me. This is a good link Mary but what I saw was someone had asked about it and some member posted about it causing swelling in the stomach area which presses on the diaphragm, lungs and makes breathing worse.
I have no idea why I can't connect to CI. Even tried going through foxfire and still couldn't.
Low Carb basically means nothing white except cauliflower. No potatoes, pasta, bread, crackers, cookies, cakes and you all get the idea. Lots of salads, veggies, fruit, and protein.
Just about as hard to do as quitting smoking but it has to be each persons own decision as to what they are willing to give up and do in order to help themselves breath better.

Hi Betty, Guess I don't have that one. Here is one more about carbs. Not COPD. This nutrition stuff is mindboggling to me. I am learning some slowly. My husband now has diabetes and I am overweight and never been in my life before 2002. www.webmd.com/food-recipes/nutrition-labels-9/carbohydratesHave a good upcoming weekend.

Hi Betty, funny you mention low carb dieting and I was looking into it again yesterday. I lost a couple lbs a week when I tried it before. I didnt stick with it cuz 2 lbs a wk wasnt fast enough for me. I am now changing my attitude, lol. When a diabetic at work was doing it along with walking, he lost quite a bit. he was allowed 6 carbs per meal, 15g equaled 1 carb, or something like that anyway. I didnt starve when I did it, I just had to knock out all that good junk food, and I did eat 'white' just watched the portions.

Shouldn't even call it a diet because it is a way of eating that you have to do always not just to get to a certain weight. The diabetic diet is also low carb and Blondie aka Pat eats that way and has lost a lot of weight. You don't lose it overnight but you didn't put it on overnight (at least I don't think you did). You do have to do some sort of exercise with it or with any eating plan or no eating plan. One lady said Move more, eat less. I don't think you have to eat less but you do have to watch what you eat. Not easy. I would love to have a dozen donuts and I would like to eat every one.
Mary, you can have about 20 to 30 grams of carbs a day so you just have to look at labels and get the foods with the lowest carbs. Anything with sugar will have lots of carbs.
Believe me I am no diet expert, just posting information I have been told by experts.

A gal i know lost a bunch of weight just cutting her portion size. To help her, after she ate one helping of smaller portions she got up and cleaned up her kitchen/did dishes etc. so she wouldnt be tempted to 2nds. Im eating off a smaller plate (salad size I guess it is) too to help.

Sue, I've heard that too and that is a great idea. I have saucers with my set of dishes and I am going to use those to eat off of.

Does anyone have any suggestions for someone to gain weight? I tried Ensure, but it was nasty.

Cindy, when I needed to gain weight I used Carnation Instant breakfast and drank one a day and after supper I would make an Ice cream shake and add a packet of the instant breakfast to it. Worked for me and the carnation instant breakfast is much better tasting and you can get sugar free also. Good luck, it is hard to gain when your sick.
